David Kane Smith is the Coordinating Director of the Firm's litigation section and was named the Firm’s Managing Director effective January 2008. Mr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University (B.A., 1969) and his master's degree in educational supervision from Cleveland State University (M.Ed., 1979). Mr. Smith attended law school at Cleveland State University and graduated magna cum laude (J.D., 1984). Since that time, Mr. Smith has represented public employers, especially school boards, in all aspects of school and employment law, including labor negotiations, arbitrations, workers' and unemployment compensation matters, student discipline and personnel matters. Since 1993, Mr. Smith has developed an extensive practice defending school boards in civil rights and employment discrimination cases in both federal and state court. Mr. Smith speaks at a number of educational seminars and state-wide presentations. Mr. Smith is a member of the Cleveland, Ohio State and American Bar Associations, the National School Boards Association Council of School Board Attorneys, the Ohio Council of School Board Attorneys, the Education Law Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys. Mr. Smith is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the field of education law.
